Description
Micodin is a pH-balanced, medicated antibacterial and antifungal shampoo for cats and dogs. It is used to treat and manage skin infections caused by yeast, ringworm, and bacteria. It helps provide relief from related symptoms like itching, redness, inflammation, and foul odor.
Key Ingredients
Micodin is formulated with a dual-action active ingredient profile:
- Chlorhexidine Gluconate (2% w/v): A broad-spectrum antiseptic/bactericidal agent. It binds to bacterial cell walls to alter their permeability and destroy the bacteria.
- Miconazole Nitrate (2% w/v): A potent antifungal agent. It is highly effective at destroying fungi and yeast (such as Malassezia pachydermatis) by breaking down their cell membranes.
Common Uses
Veterinarians commonly prescribe Micodin to help manage conditions such as:
- Bacterial skin infections (pyoderma)
- Fungal infections (e.g., ringworm)
- Yeast infections (malassezia dermatitis)
- Seborrheic dermatitis (scaly, greasy, and smelly skin)
How to Use & Precautions
Always use the shampoo under the direction of a licensed veterinary practitioner. A common routine includes:
- Preparation: Thoroughly wet your pet’s coat with warm water.
- Application: Apply a generous amount and work it into a rich lather over the entire body.
- Contact Time: Massage the lather deeply into the skin and leave it on for 5 to 15 minutes to allow the ingredients to penetrate and take effect.
- Rinse: Rinse the coat thoroughly with clean water.
- Frequency: It is often recommended 2 to 3 times a week at first, eventually reducing to once a week as the condition improves.
Important Warnings
- Avoid Eyes and Mucous Membranes: Keep the shampoo strictly away from your pet’s eyes, nose, mouth, and genital areas.
- Prevent Licking: Do not allow your pet to lick the product. Keep them safely occupied or use a cone until they are completely dry.
- Safety First: If your pet develops persistent redness, irritation, or itching, stop using the shampoo and contact your vet.
