Description
Sebolytic shampoo is a medicated, tar-free shampoo designed to treat severe scaly, greasy, and flaky skin conditions in pets (dogs, cats, and horses). It removes excess crusts, regulates sebum production, controls malodor, and restores the skin’s natural microbial balance.
How to Use Sebolytic Shampoo
Follow these directions closely to ensure the active ingredients (such as salicylic acid) can work effectively on the skin:
- Prep: Wet your pet’s coat thoroughly with warm water.
- First Wash: Apply the shampoo evenly onto the coat and massage it into the skin to create a rich lather. Rinse thoroughly.
- Second Wash & Wait: Apply the shampoo a second time and massage it in. This time, allow it to sit on the pet’s coat for 5 to 10 minutes to allow the ingredients to penetrate the skin and scales.
- Final Rinse: Rinse the pet completely with clean, warm water and dry their coat.
Frequency of Use
- Standard use: It is typically recommended to use the shampoo 2 to 3 times a week until the skin condition improves.
- Maintenance: Once the scaling and greasiness are under control, you can transition to 1 time a week, or exactly as directed by your veterinarian.
Indications
Veterinarians generally prescribe Sebolytic shampoo to manage:
- Keratoseborrheic disorders (oily, flaky, or crusty skin)
- Dandruff and severe dry patches
- Unpleasant odors caused by excessive sebum (skin oils)
- Yeast or bacterial skin complications
